The Botanical Garden of Tirana (BG) is founded in 1971, based on the phytogeographic and systematic principles. It extends in a surface of nearly 15 ha, in hilly slopes of the southern part of Tirana[1]. Like the MNS, the BG is separated since 1996 as the University Service Unit, affiliated to the FNS (UT). It is a unique institution in Albania with scientific, cultural and educative features.

The scientific activity is focused mainly on the study of Albanian flora, especially the threatened, rare and endemic taxa, and their introduction at the BG. Actually, about 1.400 species or other taxonomic forms, almost one third of Albanian flora, are sheltered there. Additional activities are the study of bio-ecology of the introduced plants, the phytosociological study of the natural pastures, forests, protected areas etc. In 1981 was published for the first time the Index Seminum, which is exchanged with about 160 Botanical Gardens throughout the world. The seeds and scientific information on Albanian flora and vegetation is continuously exchanged, too. The Garden is member of BGCI (Botanical Garden Conservation International) and has been very active in several projects, such as Interreg II, Corine, Emerald, Peen-See, etc

Three researchers carry on their full activity in the BG, qualified in genetics, plant systematic, phytosociology, plant ecology. They are responsible of undergraduate subjects Geobotany, Phytogeography and Biogeography, and some postgraduate subjects in biological curricula. They are regularly involved in the leading of field practices of botanical subjects like: Geobotany, Phytogeography, Biogeography, Plant Systematic and General Botany, lead students in their undergraduate or postgraduate diploma theses, and assist during the visits from the other faculties or even other universities.

The Garden acts, also, as an ‘ex-situ’ – laboratory for the pupils and students of the schools and Universities of the country, as well as for the amateurs of flora of Albania. Many visitors of all ages frequent yearly the Garden. Pupils of elementary and middle schools from Tirana and the districts develop here special teaching topics in Biology. BG offers teaching possibilities for the students of biological curricula from FNS (UT), for the students from Geography (UT), from Forestry (Agricultural University of Tirana), as even for the students of biological curricula from the universities of Shkodra, Elbasani and Gjirokastra.
